SEDAR Institute in cooperation with the Friedrich Naumann Foundation’s alumni network known as FAN Malaysia  organised a training workshop on strategic rethinking in Penang on 4 October 2009.

This Strategic Rethinking workshop is aimed at re-examining political campaign strategies in the last election and formulating new ones to overcome those weaknesses.

The content of the workshop was modeled after that of a strategic thinking workshop organised annually by the FNF’s Academy for Leadership (IAF) in Germany.  However, the Malaysian version is adapted to local situations and the duration is tightened to one day from two weeks.  Participants included members of political parties and activists in the state of Penang.  They shared campaign experiences in lively and fruitful discussions.

The workshop started with an ice breaking game of fixing a puzzle.  After that Mr. Khaw Veon Szu, SEDAR Executive Director and FAN member, presented a paper on "changing mindset" and Ms. Ng Yeen Seen on a concept of Strategic Planning.

Dr. Pimrapaat Dusadeeisariyakul, FNF Malaysia programme manager, shared her observation and opinions on election campaigns in Malaysia and provided some simple rules for young politicians to achieve and manage success.

This workshop was the result of a combined effort of FAN Malaysia members.  Ms. Ng attended the seminars on Strategic Political Communication and Strategic Planning at the IAF in June 2008 and August 2009 respectively.  Mr. Khaw attended a seminar at the IAF in 2006.
