Gerakan Youth Secretary General Dr. Dominic Lau today in reference to the move by PAS Youth that submitted a memorandum to Dato' Seri Utama Dr. Rais Yatim, the Minister of Information, Communications and Culture, asking the government to intervene in the control of mainstream media’s advertisements and promotional activities for the Valentine’s Day, Gerakan Youth is strongly disagreed and feels that the demand by the PAS Youth is not benefiting to the economy and also unfair to the non-Muslim. “Pas Youth should not associate the Valentine’s Day with promiscuous relationship in between unmarried men and women. The advertisements published by the business shops in mainstream media as in romantic dinner, roses, chocolates, jewelleries and others are just the commercial practices for sales promotion by the business shops and certainly not advocating premarital sex. PAS Youth should understand that the Valentine’s Day is an international festival that is celebrated world-widely; there are many other countries other than Malaysia which are also celebrating this festival. They should focus on how to stop the Muslims involved in the Valentine’s Day celebration activities instead of asking the government to make regulatory actions which are unreasonable,” said Dominic Lau. In this regard, Dominic Lau once again wanted to urge the PAS Youth not to interfere the freedom of the people to celebrate festivals, even at the time when they are yet to form the federal government they are already advocating various regulatory actions, if one day their party is given the mandate to govern, will the freedoms that the people are currently enjoying still be able to be preserved, that is something worth our thinking and evaluation.
