The dialogue on Is More Government Intervention the Solution? at 4pm on a Monday (04th May 2009) brought together 40 concerned individuals from the civil society, law makers, state legislatures, practitioners, private sector and youth groups.
The 2-hour long dialogue was a cooperation between SEDAR Institute, Malaysia Think Tank and Friedrich Naumann Alumni Network (FAN) Malaysia, designed to give participants a chance to share and debate on this topic, which is close to our heart. The first speaker, Dr. Tom G Palmer, a senior fellow from the CATO Institute USA, explained that governments worldwide have been creating ‘stimulus packages’ to cushion further downturn in the economy. Governments interfere and artificially engineer the financial market, and in many other industries through stimulus packages during this economic crisis. However, according to Dr. Tom, there is a vast difference between what the government could, and should do. There are too many examples of government interventions that ended up making things worse, such as the Great Depression in the 1930s. The second speaker, Dr Doug Den Uyl, Vice President for Educational Programs at Liberty Fund Inc, spoke about the roles and responsibilities of a government, especially in ensuring social stability, upholding the rule of law et cetera. The last speaker, Mustafa Akyol from Turkey shared his perspective on the false dichotomy between atheism and Islamism in Turkey. He stressed that everyone should be given the right to define who they are, and what religion they practice. Participants had an engaging sessions with the three (3) speakers, and among several questions that the floor raised included If the government does not define its citizen, what will happen to national identity?; to what extend should the government intervene in our daily lives. |
